What is Naturopathic Medicine?

 

Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive and integrated approach to improving health and treating illness in patients of all ages. It is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Naturopathic Doctors employ a wide range of therapies to create a preventative, restorative and individualized approach to health care. These therapies include clinical nutrition counseling, lifestyle assessment and counseling, acupuncture and Asian medicine, botanical (herbal) medicine, homeopathic medicine, physical treatments. The aim of the Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is always to support and stimulate the body's innate ability to heal itself. Naturopathic treatments can complement conventional medical treatments or be used effectively on their own.

 

Naturopathic medicine is founded on 5 principles:

       First, do no harm.

       Act in co-operation with the healing powers of nature.

       Address the fundamental causes of disease.

       Heal the whole person through individualized treatment

       Teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.

About Naturopathic Doctor

 

Ontario naturopathic doctors are provincially regulated with standardized credential requirements. Registered (Licensed) naturopathic doctors are required to complete at least three years of pre-medical studies at a recognized university followed by four years of full-time training at an accredited institution of naturopathic medicine – a comprehensive and rigorous education program. This four-year program incorporates both classroom and hands-on clinical training. After graduation, NDs must pass intensive regulatory board examinations that are standardized across North America, before qualifying for registration.

Naturopathic doctors are open to develop a collegial relationship with other healthcare professionals, including MD’s, other ND’s, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and registered massage therapists, in delivering integrative and comprehensive care in leading patients toward optimal physical, mental/emotional and spiritual health!
